IN BLOOM
Fall 2018

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Today is World Kindness Day, and it’s no accident that this autumn newsletter (and therefore this note from me) is hitting your inbox today. While I know that – grammatically – kindness is a noun; I also know that kindness is something that we do, not just something that we are.

We can’t expect good things to just happen on their own, we have to make them happen. Random Acts of Flowers could have finished before it began. We could have thought “Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone got flowers when they were hurt or lonely?” and left it there. But, we didn’t. We put our thoughts into action, and we went to work. And now, more than ten years later, we’ve served hundreds of thousands of people and positively impacted many, many lives.

Everyone who has been a part of Random Acts of Flowers’ journey so far has done just that. So, thank you! Because every minute you spend volunteering, every dollar you donate, every person to whom you spread the word of delivering hope - you make kindness a verb. Through your dedication and help, we’ve turned potential kindness into kinetic kindness, and we are building momentum to do so much more in the years to come.

RAF GETS A LITTLE SPOOKY AT BOO-QUETS

Our special Halloween Flowers After Hours - BOO-quets - was a huge success!

Thank you to our guests, volunteers, special teacher "Toad," and Goebbert's Farm for donating the pumpkins. Participants (some of whom got in the Halloween spirit by coming in costume) filled them with beautiful flowers.

The next day, we delivered them to a group of awesome ladies at St. Mary of Providence and some great kids at the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

FOR FLORAL THERAPY SESSIONS

at The Grove at Skokie had at a recent Floral Therapy Session!
This Thursday (which just happens to be National Philanthropy Day), RAF Chicago will join with other area nonprofits for the Make It Better Family Foundations Seminar, featuring a keynote address from Phil Buchanan, President for the Center for Effective Philanthropy.

RAF CEO and Founder, Larsen Jay, will also take part in a panel discussion with other nonprofit leaders about the importance of philanthropy and giving in our communities.

We are excited for the opportunity to take part in this exciting event and introduce our mission of delivering hope to Chicago's philanthropic movers and shakers!
VOLUNTEERING FROM THE HEART

Volunteer Barb Velcich has been with RAF for almost a year now, and loves "coming to prepare and arrange flowers with like-minded women. We have a good time talking while we work. I am always amazed at the quantity and quality of the arrangements we make."

She was inspired to start volunteering at RAF Chicago because of an uncle whom she visited on a weekly basis at a Glenview nursing home. From those visits, she "realized how much flowers would brighten the lives of the residents," but she soon learned that volunteering delivered hope back to her, as well.

She says "This volunteer opportunity has given me an outlet for my creativity and useful way to use my time," and her husband has even commented on how happy she is on the days she volunteers.
